Clara sure has gotten herself in the thick of things this week! Alongside Mr. Hot Stuff Hawk, she is navigating Luddite social structure while being very deep in L.U.D. territory. She meets two different groups of people – the first is an incredibly kind family and community, the second is a biker gang trying to orchestrate a heist. The contrast is stark. When I think of the differences between the two groups I think about the duality of mankind, and how none of us are all good, or all evil; we are who we are, a mixture of bits passed down by our ancestors. Clara cannot fully move past her programming yet, but I think she has the potential to do so under the right conditions.
Without either group, Clara and Hawk wouldn’t have made it very far without causing more of a scene than they did with the stolen car. These two Avants needed both the “good” and the “bad” Luddites to get as far as they have, but I personally haven’t read further than Chapter 23 yet, so I’ll have to wait to see how Clara processes the gray area she’s found herself standing in.
